Recent Progress (2025 - 2026)

Over the 13-month period from January 2025 to January 2026, Biscayne Bay Waterkeeper Inc demonstrated remarkable growth and impact, evolving from conducting basic water quality monitoring to securing $20 million in state funding and achieving measurable ecosystem improvements. The organization's trajectory shows a clear progression from foundational work in early 2025—such as honoring environmental leadership through the Porter Prize and establishing community partnerships—to major systemic victories by year-end, including the restoration of 10,000 endangered staghorn corals and nitrogen level improvements in 7 Biscayne Bay regions (up from just 1). This journey culminated in January 2026 with the passage of County Resolution 981-25 recognizing coral reefs as $675 million natural infrastructure, demonstrating how sustained community engagement, scientific monitoring, and strategic legal advocacy can create lasting environmental and policy change.
